What Helmet Cam?
I’m guessing your into an extreme sport, yes? Then you probably watch the extreme sports networks avidly, drooling over the first person point of view video shots.
Here’s some news buddy, THAT was taken using a helmet cam! I just love the shots they can give and I’m betting you do to.
Whats all that technical blurb about HD and 720p and all that?
The technical blurb is actually pretty simple to understand. HD as most of us know is short for High Definition. It’s a broad term used for modern video standards. There’s 2 types regularly used right now (more on the way), they are 720p and 1080p. The p is for pixels by the way
If you’ve used a computer or games console before you’ll know that a pixel is a tiny little spot on your screen and it’s how a computer monitor is rated.
So what does 720 pixels mean then? Simple, if you looked at your TV the side of the screen is what we will measure. If you imagine there was imaginary lines running across your TV. Normal TV broadcasts have about 360 lines running across the screen. DVD movies have about 480 lines across the screen…can you see where I’m going with this?
That’s right, 720p has 720 lines running across the screen and 1080p has 1080 lines. Not that hard is it? In essence, the quality of a 720p recording is TWICE as good as that of a standard TV broadcast. A 1080p recording is actually MORE than TWICE the quality of a DVD! And we thought DVDs were amazing when they were first released eh?
What’s all this FPS rubbish when they talk about a helmet cam?
This is a damn easy concept to understand. FPS (frames per second) tells you how many still images make up 1 second video. Have you seen the old black and white movies? They seemed really jerky and jiddery? THat’s because they only ran at about 15 FPS. BAck then a guy had to turn a handle to record the film and he literally couldn’t turn the handle fast enough!!! lol.
Broadcast TV and other standard video formats nowadays are all between about 24 and 27 FPS. They certainly seem smooth enough to your eye eh? The problem with HD video is that the images are getting bigger and bigger so it’s harder to record because it needs more room to be stored. As a result of this the first HD cameras had beautiful image quality, but low FPS so the image was nice but the video was jerky. That improved over time so that most HD cameras you buy now will be 30FPS and run nice and smooth.
Here’s the bit I was getting to about the quality of these tiny little helmet cameras. Not only do they record in Full HD glory but almost all of them can record 720p video at 60FPS!!! That’s more than twice the FPS of TV with twice the image quality!!! Amazing eh? For a couple of hundred dollars you can be taking professional, better than broadcast quality footage!!! Sweet!!!!!
Who needs a helmet cam?
Anyone and EVERYone! Let’s say you’re an amateur extreme sports enthusiast. Have you noticed you always pull off the most fly trick when nobody else is watching? lol. Get a helmet camera then you just upload your video to youtube (or to what helmet cam) and then you can prove to your friends how much of a god (or goddess lol) you are! Have a look on youtube and just see how many hits helmet cam footage normally gets…it’s incredible!
Another situation…you’re ready to leave the amateur seen and fancy yourself as a bit of a pro. Your helmet camera footage is going to be absolutely invaluable to you when it comes to promoting yourself to sponsors! Plus you can showcase your moves in a youtube channel and hopefully go viral!
And another…You have nothing to do with extreme sports (poor you!). You do, however, work as a surveyor and are forever taking video and still shots for your clients. Well? What does a helmet cam do? It does both of those tasks with amazing quality and is half the size!!!
Told you I would sell you!!!
